Five questions to ask your residential construction service company

Making the most of your home investment

What to expect in the remodeling process

Our goal is to make remodeling and renovation a wonderful experience for the homeowner.

A quality final product is, of course, the most critical element in our customers’ satisfaction. However, any veteran of a remodeling or extensive home repair project can tell you that how you get to that final product can be nerve-wracking, if you don’t have the right contractor. There’s no way around the fact that remodeling is an invasive process; you’re inviting the builder into your home and, depending on the nature of the project, you may find some portion of the house is inaccessible during certain phases of the work.

Brian Mitchell Construction offers a few simple, key advantages in order to minimize the disruption to your lifestyle while we’re upgrading your home. This is what you can expect from us.

Three questions to ask your residential construction service company

Picking the right company to handle your construction or remodeling project is crucial. Clearly, you as the customer will be looking at price and time estimates in making your selection. However, here are three further questions that can help ensure that you wind up happy with your choice.

How long have you worked in the business?

Experience counts. In particular, experience is crucial in correctly estimating time and cost. New construction companies trying to break into the business may offer what looks like a fantastic price and/or unbelievably fast turnaround. Unfortunately, unrealistic estimates lead to either an over-budget project, or to corner-cutting by the builder.

Brian Mitchell Construction is proud to provide more than three decades’ experience in home construction and renovation.

Can I contact your references?

Anyone can throw out a snappy customer quote. Better to speak directly to a couple of customers. Be prepared to ask just a few specific questions: Was the final quality of the craftsmanship good? Did the builder fulfill his promises? Was the job completed on time and on budget?

What documentation do you provide before and after a job?

Clear documentation does wonders to keep both contractor and customer happy. Up front, expect written estimates including a timeline that spells out the phases of any large project. When the project is completed, you should expect a written summary of materials used, material costs and labor costs. You should also work with the builder to create the final (written) punchlist of items required to consider the job final.

Making the most of your home investment

Odds are, your home is your most valuable possession and your biggest investment. Remodeling can help you make the most of that investment.

People don’t generally start a remodeling project solely to increase the resale value of their house, but there’s no question that a well-done renovation or addition can pay off not only in extra space and comfort, but also in monetary terms. By common estimates, a typical renovation can increase the property’s value by 80% (or more) of the renovation’s cost with a year or two.

Remodeling Online offers some figures specific to various kinds of remodeling projects and their affect on resale value:

If you are looking to sell your home immediately, certain types of projects – those that either repair a fundamental flaw such as a leaky roof, or cosmetic work that dramatically increases your home’s curb appeal – are the ones more likely to offer an immediate payoff.
